Export Bookmarks to Import into another copy of the document.

Here's the scenario:

Our documents (legal office) can exceed 10,000 pages.  We receive them as PDFs without bookmarks, but need to add bookmarks once we receive them.  We source this out to an outside agency.

In the past (with older versions of Acrobat) we were able to send a copy of the doc on DVD to the third party vendor and they would create the bookmarks.  They would then extract an overlay of the bookmarks into a much smaller file, which they could email us.  We would then import that file into our original copy of the document.  I did not participate in this process - it was before my time and has only been described to me.

We are reluctant to use ftp to transfer confidential documents, we won't email them (generally too big for that in any case) and we're trying to avoid having to overnight DVDs back again.  Also, we are going to have another agency put the documents through OCR to insert searchable text behind the image, preferably simultaneous to the bookmarking.  We would prefer not to have to keep the documents stagnate (put off OCR) until the bookmarks come back, but if we have to we will.

My questions:

1.  Does the past scenario ring any bells - is anyone familiar with the process as I've described it?

2.  Does anyone have any idea of how I can accomplish this now, preferable importing the bookmarks back into the OCR converted doc?  I have access to Acrobat versions 6 through 9.

I've reviewed a number of posts in this and other forums, but no one seems to have this same question.  We're processing 100k+ such documents and saving even a day (or $10 per DVD to overnight back) would be significant to us.

Thanks!
