editing show/hide field list via javascript

$

0

Hello,

I have designed some forms in Acrobat that use layers to display different information based on the category of the person filling out the form. They select their category on page of the form and then based on their choice, the rest of the form is customized for that category.

The layers were built in Indesign and exported. The form fields are turned on and off via the "show/hide a field" action in the button definition for each layer.

The problem is that there are dozens of fields to turn off and on for each button and once I've set the action, there is no way I know of to see a list of which fields are controlled by each button. If I edit the button, I can access the actions list but I have to click on each one in the list independently to see what field is assigned to it, and the list itself is a small scrolling window and every time you close an action it resets to the top of the scrolling window.

I would love to be able to see a list of all the fields controlled by this button and what each action does, and ideally to be able to add or edit the actions performed without having to go through this interface. It's really time-consuming and impossible to figure out if I have the hide or show value set up incorrectly because it takes forever to find that particular field's setting again.

I haven't learned javascript yet, and I think I need to asap.

Meanwhile - on a hunch, I made a copy of the pdf, changed the extension to .zip, and opened it in BB Edit. So, I see lots of these command lines, which I know must be the javascript for showing and hiding the fields. The fieldnames are in parentheses in the code below.

So, I can see all of these but how can I edit these? Can I turn these into a script and change them in Acrobat?

Is there a simple script "shell" that I can paste them into and have the button run the script instead of the separate actions?

Cannot find or create the font ArialMT

Just recently I started getting the message when opening pdf files containing ArialMT (typically by PC users) (I am using a Mac obviously and Acrobat 9.3.3):

Cannot find or create the font ArialMT. Some characters may not display or print correctly.

I've looked around in the forums and no one else has had this problem answered. Can't find anything else on the subject that pertains to how to fix it on a Mac, only on a PC using coding.

Problem opening FDF files with Acrobat and Safari

Hi,

When I download a FDF file from a website, Safari opens it, which in turn opens Acrobat Professional (8.1.2), then a Security dialog appears asking if I want to allow access to the site. If I click yes, then another dialog pops up asking the same thing. If I tick Remember my action, and click OK, then Safari and Acrobat start flashing quickly until Safari crashes.

Does anyone know why this happens, and what do I need to do to resolve the problem, either with Safari, Acrobat, or on the server?

Thanks,

Joris

When I click on Advanced=Sign & Certify, I only am able to "Preview" the document. What am I doing wrong? Using v. 8.1.6

Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot be launched at this time - why?? Pls help!

Everytime I open a pdf I get the following message...

"Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot be launched at this time. You must launch at least one other suite component (such as Adobe Photoshop) before launching Acrobat 8 Professional".

What does this mean?

I don't have Photoshop. Does that mean I need to get it to be able to look at pdf's?

Is there anything I can just download without having to buy it?

I have also just downloaded Adobe Reader 9.0, if that info helps?

Please help, I need to work on a pdf for work due tomorrow!!

Form fields not printing

I've created an interactive form from a word document in Reader, but I'm having trouble printing it.

When I print the document the regular text all prints, but only some of the text fields print. In the print dialog I select print Document and Markups, so as far as I can tell everything should be printing. Interestingly, every time I print the same specific text fields always print out, and the rest are always blank... so it seems arbitrary, but not completely so.

If I print from Preview everything comes out fine, but I'd still like to know what I'm doing wrong in Reader.

I'm running Adobe Reader 7.0 on mac OS X 10.4.11

Thanks!

How to type visible text in an Acrobat document?

Hi there.I totally don't know how to use Acrobat and I'd like to know how to fill up an Acrobat document.
Whenever I try to type text in the blank fields, nothing shows and I can't see if there is text or what I'm writing.
It would be nice to know how to make the text appear in black.
I've tried the different tools but can't change anything.
Thanks for any help.

Signature won't print for receipient

My financial advisor recently sent me a PDF to fill out, sign, & return. I'm using Acrobat Professional CS4 (MacPro tower, OS/10.6.2) and filled in the needed lines using the Typewriter tool. I then used Acrobat's stamp tool to place my scanned signature on the appropriate part of the form. Saved the file and emailed it back.

When she opens the file she sees all of my additions including the signature but when she attempts to print it out for a needed hard copy, the signature disappears. Is there some security setting in the document that I need to reconfigure or is the problem on her end? In Document Properties -> Security Method, Method is set to No Security and Summary reads Allowed for all ten options.

Additional info: she is on Windows, however I sent the file to a friend in my Mac club and he had the same issue: saw everything I added, but signature will not print. Prints just fine here at home. Hence I'm convinced it is some document setting on my end that needs alteration.

Why does my PDF look so CRAPPY when I print through acrobat???

$

I have been having troubles with exporting a PDF from an Indesign file.. when I printed the exported PDF from acrobat, text was printing out very pixelated. I was exporting the file in indesign as a press quality pdf. The text looked fine when I viewed it in acrobat and zoomed in, but when I printed it out it looked very pixelated and not as black as it had when I had printed the file directly from indesign.

so this is what I've figured it out so far... I was exporting to PDF in indesign then opening it in adobe arobat pro and printing from there... for some reason when I went into my advanced print settings in acrobat, it was set to "print as image: 100 dpi." I changed it and it printed out better but not perfect. To double check it was adobe that was causing the issue, I opened and printed the pdf through mac preview. This looked perfect - - exactly like it did when I printed through INDD.

So my questions are, 1> WHY does it automatically printing as an image 100 dpi in adobe? and 2> how can I change this setting so when my client opens it up, they dont have to mess with any of the print settings to get it to look how it's supposed to? Is this a setting I can change when I save the file? I want to make sure it prints out correctly because one of the fonts used is ultralight and can look very very light if printed incorrecty. It looks perfect when I print through preview, but even printing as an image in 600 dpi through acrobat pro, the ultralight font looks lighter and more faded than it should (and than it does in the preview and INDD printed files). If i unselect the "print as image" checkbox, the ultralight text looks better but still not perfect. So that would make my second question >> WHY is the print quality worse when I print through adobe, and how can I remedy this? Any ideas??? Any help much appreciated!

Acrobat 9 seems incompatible with Snow Leopard

Got my Snow Leopard late this afternoon and have had great luck with it so far (did an upgrade, not a clean install)...except for Acrobat 9. Ugh! Attempting to print to PDF via Adobe PDF 9.0 printer/driver causes the printer/driver to fire up and the progress windows indicates that distiller launches, but after that, the prompt for where to save the PDF to never appears and the file in the print queue disappears. Checking the log file shows quite a few errors are happening:

I've done a full uninstall and cleaned out all files, then reinstalled. I did the old repair/restore trick from the Help menu. I even tried printing to PDF after each patch/upgrade all the way to the latest version. No luck at all. And yes, all other CS4 apps I have work fine.

Any suggestions?

Everytime I try to run an update for Adobe Acrobat (in this case to version 9.4.2), I am met with this error message:

The update could not be applied because the Adobe Acrobat application contents were modified since the original installation.

Please reinstall Adobe Acrobat and check for updates again.

I don't want to have to reinstall Acrobat everytime there is an update. Can someone tell me how I can fix this?

Attach to email not working

$

Hi All,

I have Adobe Acrobat 9 and I am trying to attach a PDF to my email program which is the new Office 2011 - Outlook for Mac. Acrobat comes up with an error stating that "An error occurred while trying to create a mail document. Acrobat is unable to complete your request." - not sure what needs to be done here, Outlook is defined as my default email program. Initially it worked for Apple Mail, but I changed the default email program to Outlook once I installed Office.

Is there a workaround for this? Any help would be grateful.

Cheers.

Ever since a recent upgrade, my Acrobat Pro wants a password "to make changes" just to open.

I don't want to make changes, I want to open the app. A similar question elsewhere in this group has not been answered.

Mac OS X Acrobat 8 Pro - Cannot attach PDF file to new email message

$

When clicking on the"attach PDF file to a new email message" button, or by selecting "attach to email" from the File Menu; the following error is received:

"An error occurred while trying to create a mail document. Acrobat is unable to complete your request."

I have checked, and Entourage is set as the default mail client, and is functioning correctly.

I thought that the default mail client not being set would cause this problem, and setting it would correct it, but that is not the case. There doesn't appear to be any "email" settings in Acrobat, unless I missed something.

This problem has been present almost as long as CS3 has been installed.

Acrobat 8 Professional is up to date at 8.2.2

Entourage 2008 is up to date at 12.2.4, and is configured for use with Exchange.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard is up to date at 10.6.3.

Any help would be greatly appriciated. I have fixed this problem before, but cannot find my notes on the fix. If I figure it out, I will update this thread with the solution. Searching Google for "mac acrobat cannot attach pdf to new email message", "An error occurred while trying to create a mail document. Acrobat is  unable to complete your request." (or anything of the like), or "mac cannot email from acrobat", etc, etc, etc, just leads to a world of unhelpful information...which is why I am creating this post.

How does crop pages work in Acrobat?

$

Although I have "eliminated white space" from pdfs for email attachments, recently I tried cropping a pdf before placing it in an InDesign document (it was saved as a pdf from a crossword puzzle-creating application and sent to me). I seemed to be able to crop it, save the cropped version, and verify that it was cropped by opening the pdf in Acrobat, but when I place the pdf, it always displays the image uncropped. IT suggests that the problem might be that CS2 has difficulties with Vista, although when I try it on my Mac at home, I see the same thing. Is cropping only a function available for viewing pdfs in Acrobat?

Acrobat 8.2 update problem

$

Let me start by saying that if I am the only one who was affected by this, I apologize for taking up your time. Having said that, I installed the 8.2 update for Acrobat Pro yesterday afternoon (January 14). I use Creative Suite versions CS through CS3 at work. After installing the update, Illustrator CS and CS2 refused to launch, and InDesign CS refused as well, giving me an error message about not being able to find a serial number. The CS3 applications (InDesign, Illustrator) seemed to be unaffected, and none of the versions of Photoshop were affected.

After trying various fixes (deleting caches, removing preferences files), including restoring one of the programs from a backup, I booted from a clone that I had made earlier in the day (before applying the update). Everything was working fine there, so I restored my main hard drive from the clone and everything now works as it should. I did not reapply the Acrobat update after the restore.

I did not think about repairing permissions (sorry, I forgot).

Since I'm back up and running, I'm really not asking for help. I offer this in case others have had a similar problem. And, if I am the only one, I'm just thankful I had a recent backup from which to restore. Thanks for reading.
